Meanwhile, far away from Downham, the Hertfordshire branch of the family are still struggling to enter the twentieth century and Lord Cuthbert’s cousin, The Dowager Lady Violet Crawley, has written “kindly” to him suggesting he “gets a grip on himself”. Sadly Cuthbert needs little encouragement in this direction!
